Julian Kulski

Julian Kulski

A veteran of WWII who was 12-years old when he took up arms against the Nazis

Julian Kulski, was a 10-year-old Boy Scout when the Nazis invaded his homeland of Warsaw, Poland to begin WWII. In the memoir that he penned six years later—as a 16-year-old army veteran—he recalled his initial excitement as a 10-year-old: “If there is going to be a war, I do not want to miss it.” Yet the teenager doing the writing was scarred by war and haunted by the takeover and destruction of his beloved homeland. In the dozens of presentations that Julian has made to middle grade and high school students across America, he recounts how his combat experience began with small acts of sabotage against the Nazis. At age 12 he was recruited into the Polish Underground Army by his Scoutmaster, undertook a secret mission into the Warsaw Ghetto, was arrested and beaten by the Gestapo, sentenced to Auschwitz, rescued, fought in a Polish Commando unit during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, and ended the war as a 16-year-old German POW. In his presentation, Julian discusses the costs of allowing terrorism to flourish—as the Allies did during Hitler’s rise to power. He discusses what happens to a peaceful society when a totalitarian regime flexes its muscle. Says Kulski, “The casualties Poland suffered in the war are the equivalent of the number of people who died in 9/11 dying every day for 5 years in a row.”
