School visits with award winning author-illustrator Irene Kelly

How does an idea become a book? Ms. Kelly leads students through the process of creating a book, using her original artwork from Ebbie & Flo to illustrate each step along the way. During this engaging and informative presentation, she shows the evolution of her illustrations from sketches and storyboards to pastel drawings and finally the printer’s full-color press sheets. Ms. Kelly also explores the writing process, highlighting the importance of character development, plot, editing and rewriting. This portion of the program is specifically adapted to each grade level. Writing workshops are also available. A Small Dog’s Big Life; Around the World With Owney, is written in the form of letters from a variety of postal clerks from across the globe. Ms. Kelly’s writing workshops take students on a ‘round the world’ writing adventure in which they look at Owney’s life from his point of view. Students examine character, ‘voice,’ and other driving forces involved in the composition of a story. These sessions are collaborative, creative, and lots of fun. Irene Kelly lives in New Jersey, but is available to travel.
